Rugby World Cup: England need pack leader to beat Australia – Matt Dawson columnCat:未分類
Please let us know if you agree.
I think England coach Eddie Jones choice to proceed Owen Farrell to fly-half to get Saturdays quarter-final from Australia will be the one that is perfect.
In fact, so long as Henry Slade was inserted to replace him at the centers, I think it was unavoidable.
Im since hes played well in Japan for George Ford, who has started every match of this World Cup at 10 – although possibly his previous form from the games has depended against him.
In the number of enormous pressure games at global level in his profession hes perhaps wobbled.
It may be a little harsh on him because he is further down the line and more convinced today. But certainly in the past when hes played knock-out games with big decisions, I wouldnt have always said hed be my first pick.
Farrell, with Slade and Manu Tuilagi outside him was a Fantastic combination during the Six Countries.
It is a mix that the opposition struggled to find any change out of and was quite threatening in attack.
It shuts down a lot of options for the opposition concerning where they could strike since Farrell is indeed solid there – they have got to come up with something.
But there is going to be a question mark within Slade, who hasnt played more than 40 minutes of rugby since May due to a knee injury. Will he be eloquent?
Certainly through the Six Nations that he was on a bit of a run. He looked dangerous moving ahead. He ran great lines, demonstrated ft and great ability – kicking as well as running.
He read – so I like that combination.
Australia are likely to come out with something that England wont expect and have not seen.
Its a shout putting. However, it is his position – than the wing, by which he has won his caps – so it isnt like him is completely throwing in at the deep end.
Englands attention will be on Petaia, which means it is possible to guarantee that Australia are considering going somewhere else and enjoying in another way so that England will need to update their defence.
Theyre a bunch and England need to be somewhat open-minded regarding what Australia will deliver.
The one surprise for me in Australias selection for Saturday is May Genia playing nine, because I really dont think he has been on form. I believe Nic White has been more solid on when the match is open as Genia and a starter has arrived.
If I had been in that England aspect Id be thinking, there. They have to attempt to place pressure onto the ruck that Genia gets static ball and becomes a little indecisive. I believe England will adopt that choice that is scrum-half.
Additionally, Genia and fly-half Christian Lealiifano have begun together. In comparison to Ben Youngs and Farrell, theres a enormous difference there.
In the back row, Australia will want to guarantee the expertise of David Pocock and captain Michael Hooper gives them an advantage over England flankers Sam Underhill and Tom Curry.
But it may only ignite Underhill and Curry are the stars of the World Cup. Should they get it right against Pocock and Hooper, who are up there as the finest in the world as a venture, then the England boys will put their name in lights.
Pocock and Hooper will soon know that their standing is up for grabs along with this game is going to receive all their focus and then some.
In each one these quarter-finals you are likely to find every last ounce of effort and expertise – everything will be thrown out there. Nothing will be left to happen.
Nothing else matters when youve built up to it for a few decades. There are no warm-up games, theres absolutely no eligibility from the pool. That is it. That is why they sacrificed themselves, why they have been playing for as long as they have and what they dreamt of from if they were at college.
You have Pocock and Hooper that were round the block, played big games, but not won a World Cup. Itll be their final chance.
Then you have got the young pretenders coming through who were likely motivated by Pocock and Hooper and today want to shoot their mantle.
The issue hanging over Englands performances has at all times been, how will they win the game if they are behind with 20 minutes to go?
Of course, I would like England to not be in this position. But it might come to the leadership within the team. Whos the pack leader, although Youve got Farrell as captain? It is not easy to state. If you ask eight individuals theyd probably name eight unique players.
When it comes to stress moments, 1 voice at the forwards has to make things happen.
There are plenty of players with more or 50 caps. They ought to be, by today, good enough at making those decisions.
Its whether they get it done in a quarter-final of their World Cup if there is no tomorrow, no debrief. It is triumph and move on or go home.
